Stop Repeating Yourself

I have been consistently repeating false declarations on this blog with the intentions of starting different kinds of posts and coming back better than ever, then I don't. In all honesty I've been avoiding this blog, it's been an eye sore for me, allow me to explain. I began blogging in the 9th grade without the slightest clue to what I was doing, after much reading on and off re-branding, I came up with Deejay Speaks the 26th of December in 2012 with the intention of it becoming a personal style blog, it eventually grew as far as topics go, becoming a lifestyle blog with a message of self expression. Somewhere along the line, I've lost a passion for this blog not because I don't enjoy blogging but because I don't feel as though I've been achieving my message of self-expression.

The Style Critique

Hello guys, today is a day of style self recognition. Sharing my personal style on this blog has always been fun, but it's time I really start evaluating my style choices and what I want out of my looks.I'm looking for a signature, something that's notably me about my look, I did a post similar to this when I began interviewing myself about what I want to put into my closet here, Finding My Signature. In Finding My Signature, I evaluate a few fashion bloggers who have noticeable style niches(although these bloggers do play in fashion, by no means do they stay in the box),I decided that instead of searching and trying out a million different things on my own to find my signature, that perhaps my signature is already here!My stand out quality may be here already and once recognized I can build on it.

  •  I love dark monochromatic outfits. I noticed looking through my outfits, I really do have a thing
  • for playing with black, whether it's coordinated with another color or print, black is pretty consistently seen throughout my outfits.

Playing Catch Up

Hey guys, school has kind of side-tracked me and the ideas I had to go into this blog but I hope I can catch up.I think I want to begin doing more videos on my poetry(but outfits will continue to be posted as well).Adding more of my self expression to this blog is always a major goal for me. Having more than one form to feel free and express your way through is always helpful and I definitely need that. My poetry collection has grown immensely and so has more drive to share it.Sometimes I'm afraid of sharing my poetry because I'm afraid of how people will dissect my words, but ultimately I know the truth of my message and how others interpret it, is up to them-not me.
It makes me feel better to share my poetry because some people just need to know that they're not alone in the way they feel.Half the issue with being internally in pain is thinking that you're alone in this pain, and that no one has ever felt this way, but that's not true and that's not to take away from that person's unique journey but more so to help that person stay encouraged. I recall a few month's ago a comment on a video I did called When I Tried To Be Pretty, someone commented that the poem "lifted" their spirit, I was so touched and I still think of that every time I start feeling defeated.
Lately, I've been feeling like I'm drifting with this blog so adding my poetry makes me feel like I'm actually accomplishing something with this.In addition to sharing my poetry of course I'm going to share my personal style, below are three outfits from the past week. The weather has been somewhat awkward. I just noticed that these 3 outfits feature some of my favorite colors, blue, red, and black(gang member anybody?)Let me know about your favorite form of self expression and why you do it, below whether it's through your style, writing or something completely new!

Mood Board Mission

I use the doors of my closet and the back of my door as mood board holders.I'm not the only one  who does this right? Looking at the specific magazine clippings that catch my eye helps keep me inspired when going about picking out clothes. Posting pictures and sketches all over the place may be considered an adolescent tendency(like when your mom puts your picture or something on the fridge), but it's a lot more than that.
I read a blog post by Jessica of Look What I Got, where she visited the ASOS head office, she began describing the hair and makeup studio and how they use mood boards to inspire looks and the models' makeup. ASOS isn't the only company that utilizes mood boards Just Fab(an online shoe subscription) uses mood boards, many other companies are notorious for large mood boards to inspire for new trends, motivation and to organize objectives.
Besides brands, I noticed many bloggers have mood boards in their rooms too. When taking outfit of the day pictures of course your viewers are going to take notice of your room and how could they not notice the overflowing images behind you. When I notice a blogger uses mood boards and collages like me, I always get a sense that there's a little more spark going on behind the stylish blogger.
The level of creativity used behind collages and mood boards is great,it takes a lot to figure out what you want it to say and how you want it to be organized. Some places I received mood board inspiration are, the Pinterest board, Great Examples of Mood Boards another Pinterest board called Inspiring Mood Boards. Let me know if you have any collages or mood boards below in the comment section and if they help keep you inspired.

Makeup: What's Your Signature Look?

Makeup is still somewhat foreign to me. My knowledge of makeup goes as far as the YouTube videos I've viewed...yea sad. Although I love the idea of experimenting with all kinds of makeup, finding a signature look is necessary. When you randomly decide to go out, a few basics to your favorite makeup look always comes in handy. So how do you find a signature makeup look? Interview yourself on looks that catch your eye! Questions like:

  • How much time am I willing to spend on my makeup?
  • How much money am I willing to spend on my makeup?
  • What part of my face do I want to enhance?
  • What are your favorite colors for your skin tone?
Then search for inspiration on places like Tumblr and Pinterest, but YouTube is the king of makeup inspiration topped with plenty of tutorials.Take in account a few things beforehand though:
  • Doing the same exact tutorial does not always mean your makeup is going to look exactly the same as someone else.Your skills are going to be different and depending on how much practice you have of course it's not going to be exactly the same.
  • Makeup enhances, don't expect the right cat-eye to change your entire life.Makeup is a tool not the lifeblood of your beauty.
  • Makeup should be fun.Be patient with yourself and don't pressure yourself you'll catch on and develop the skills soon enough.
Now it's time to find what you like.My personal approach to makeup is pretty simple and kind of how I approach my clothing choices. I prefer a give and take method with my makeup, enhance the lips and keep the eye neutral or vice versa, but I always play with mascara!
What catches my eye as far as colors and tones includes golden looks that make people look like bronze Goddesses, and strong cat-eyeliner is always a win with me. Highlighting the cheekbones and line of my nose is as much contouring, I know how to do. I use  a bronzer down the line of my nose and an orange blush on the tops of my cheeks, but one thing I've missed dearly is-eyeliner.

Accentuating the eyes has always been important to me.My eye makeup is nothing too subtle but nothing too loud either, just enough to gather attention. My eyes are deep dark brown so little touches to make them appear slightly lighter or shine is great for me.
Smoky eyes haven't really worked for me honestly(and trying to do smoky eyes in the morning is useless because my first class can make me sleepy, add in runny eyes...yea no good.).If eye makeup isn't the most convenient and realistic thing for me to do, lipstick  is the next weapon in my arsenal.

What's Your Go-To Fall Shoe?

Fall is here, are your feet ready?Keeping comfortable and warm for the cooler weather is extremely critical, so don't overlook the importance of the proper footwear.Having cold toes is the easiest way to upset my mood for the day, so of course I've been paying attention to shoe trends.

From knee highs, thigh highs, and ankle boots I was pretty much ready to just throw my money at the nearest store, but I've got to think wiser about my choices.I typically settle on, black military boots but I want a change, so I went back to the drawing board as far as my shoe requirements. What's versatile, gives me height without hurting my feet, and can keep my feet warm? Wedge boots!

Wedge Boot Boom

5 reasons these boots are winning include:

1. They're versatile, they come in suede, leather, studded, lace ups and much more.
2. They're comfortable,I do a lot of walking so the whole "pain is beauty" mantra can be thrown out the door quite quickly.
3. They go with so many different outfits, really well.
4. They transition into Winter perfectly, and can work their way into Summer.
5. They make me look tall!

Where to Find Style Inspiration?

The last time I looked at my closet, I shrieked and ran away. My closet doesn't deserve the shriek and run treatment. I like to think of my ability to remix my wardrobe in a lot of ways as a talent, but lately I haven't had the will or the creative prowess to pull together new looks. I'm afraid either I'm losing my touch or perhaps, my love of clothing doesn't go as deep as I thought I did. It's time to take things into my own hands and actively search for style inspiration.
Where shall I go to find some style inspiration, something to spark my love of clothing again? To the internet!Of course I began my search for clothing on Tumblr, Pinterest, Fashiolista, even Instagram, stalking fashion hastags for a spark. Then I took to my Bloglovin dashboard I found a few bloggers who's style inspired me such as Glitz n GrimeEven Though I'm Skint and Vintage Doll Risa ,featured below. In my pursuit of of style inspiration I made a Tumblr dedicated to my love of dark colors and shades called Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark, in hopes of changing the negative association dark colors have. Feel free to check out Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark here,

After creating my Tumblr, I began thinking...where do designers get their inspiration from. There was a time before social media and the internet where people had to find inspiration in books, magazines and just genuinely in life.

It's time I really opened my eyes and trained myself to see inspiration in any and everything. Exercising my creativity further will only benefit me,so finding style inspiration outside of blogs and social networks will be a fresh and nice change of pace.Typically I find inspiration in music, poetry sometimes architecture when I'm not glued to some social network. It's time I started exercising more outside sources.  Let me know in the comment below where you find creative inspiration outside of social networks.

Everything Is Looking Up

You may have noticed a layout and color scheme change to Deejay Speaks. I find as I get older, my taste and specific style have grown in dominance as well. I want my layout to be more representative of what I truly like which means there will be more changes. Approaching this new chapter means really reevaluating what look I want, and what message I want it to visually send.
In this change in my layout also comes a change in my style. I feel like I've been stuck in a rut for about a few years and I've branched out of it slightly from time to time, but it's time I truly step out of it and come into my own. Letting my natural taste in clothing and going with my gut is something I want to make a habit of. Now you can't have a change in style without at least a little inspiration.  This week will be about style inspiration from some of my favorite style icons, fellow bloggers, poetry and music!
I'm very excited for this new change and shift in my personal style. Putting more of myself in my look and being more expressive through this fashion medium is going to be fun. Looking back on my style, I don't regret any of it. I've experimented with a lot of trends but now I'm really trying to find key components to my style. I'm trying to build a solid foundation to my looks, I don't want to be at the mercy of trends. Reevaluating the looks I've done that I really like, and defining items that mean something specifically to me is very important. Developing some more individuality is critical. When did you decide, to put more originality in the way you dress, and what did you do after?
