Day 6 of the Poetry Challenge

I've had days, months and even a year of straight up and down misery. Nothing could keep me happy for long. I was in a constant state of ugly.I was feeling so ugly, I couldn't be around relatively happy people because I didn't want to ruin things for them with my attitude. This poem is about shaking loose that misery, and to stop creating misery for myself.

Day 5 of the Poetry Challenge

The easiest way for me to calm down during stress(if even for a little while) is to try and simplify things. This poem is fairly simple but I think it still holds the message I was looking for, hopefully you enjoy.

Day #4 of the Poetry Challenge

This poem is about my constant need(and I think a lot of our constant needs), to find the silver lining in situations. We search for the silver lining so much when in reality we need to let it find us.

Day 3 of the Poetry Challenge

This poem exemplifies just how much a homebody I can be, and why. Sometimes I'd sit at home as boring as it seems and just think to make certain things feel whole.Sometimes you need to sit down and remind yourself why you do what you do, because walking about with all the effort in the world, but with no purpose is a painful thing.

Day 2 of the Poetry Challenge

Hello beautiful people.Today I want to share with you a piece that I kind of wrote for myself. I am my own worst enemy but I decided to flip the tables and essentially write a poem to myself. Writing this piece has been a process of digging deep and trying to heal my self-inflicted verbal abuse.I hope this helps you feel better as it did for me.

Deejay Speaks Has Officially Turned 2 Years Old

It has been an eventful 2 years for Deejay Speaks from rebranding into a lifestyle blog, posting schedule changes, content changes and yet here we are! I want to say I appreciate all of the people who read my content, you guys show me so much encouragement to keep going with this blog.
When I first created Deejay Speaks I was tempted to delete everything all the time. I was terrified of sharing bits and pieces of myself with the internet why wouldn't I be?!The internet can be a place of opportunity and a place of trolling. So for me to create this blog it took a lot of courage, and I ended up learning a lot more through exercising this platform.I hope you all had a lovey holiday and feel free to partake in leaving feedback on my poetry challenge. I set up the challenge as a means of celebrating the new brand for Deejay Speaks.Thank you all for your encouraging words, they are eternally appreciated!

I'm writing one poem for each day, for the next 10 days. It's been a challenge for me to write lately because frankly my heart hasn't been in it. Honestly my heart hasn't been in anything.
I keep reflecting on the year and feeling as though I've failed in a way, but I know that isn't true. I haven't failed. I'm not where I want to be but that's not because I didn't try.Sometimes you don't always win no matter how many well practiced attempts you make.
No matter how hard you try, no matter how much work you put into everything, sometimes you still don't get what you want. Not achieving everything when you specifically want to is not a reflection on the work you've done, it's a reality. It's a reality of the world that you win some and lose some but the real achievement is staying in the game.
To keep going and pursuing is the true goal.Consistency and determination are the true goals. I may not have achieved my goals but I kept moving, and I will continue to do so. That being said, I'm writing up some more goals and that's how this challenge was born.

Trend #13

Plaid

Plaid by deejaystyles featuring a studded backpack

Plaid was one of the most used, dominant trends of this season. Everywhere you looked there were plaid smocks, jackets, shoes, and a lot more. Now whether you liked this trend or not, I know I caught you peeking at it lol.The thing with plaid is I appreciate those who were willing to wear it in different ways mix it with different prints, colors and textures.
I personally still have my eye on plaid dresses.I would love a casual plaid skater dress, I can throw on with my faux leather vest, black leggings and go!How would you put your spin on plaid, by the way let me know about the Spring trends of 2014 below, I need to know!

Trend #12

Sports Wear

In high school I was the farthest thing from a jock possible. I hated gym. I am not a fan of sports. The closest thing to athleticism I did in high school was running to my classes so I wouldn't be late(I'm a decent sprinter because of this actually). The varsity trend allows me to at least pretend that I was one of the cool girls that was good at sports.
I noticed a lot of sports wear was seen on style bloggers with a knack for minimalism. Letting the jersey or varsity jacket speak for itself is a great style move, but this is fashion so it can go either way. I'd imagine wearing that black and white varsity sweater with a plaid skater skirt and black platform sneakers. Which piece of sports wear would you wear?

Trend #11

Mesh

Mesh by deejaystyles featuring a purple corset

When I was younger mesh always reminded me of fishing nets, then when I got older it reminded me of the shirts people wear at raves, now I look at mesh and see it in a whole new light. Mesh is revealing but not really.Mesh inserts always up the edginess in any look.Pay attention to the mesh insert placement and how large the inserts are when deciding a certain look.
I love the mesh dresses for a saucy ensemble to New Year's Eve parties. The plaid dress in particular looks both fun and edgy at the same time, I'd probably wear it with gold earrings too.Which mesh ensemble do you like?

Trend #10

I'll be honest with you, I didn't like this trend when it first showed up. It's not that I don't like beanies, I love them it's just my hair doesn't always fit underneath them lol. I found a hot pink beanie that fits perfectly and now I love beanies. Perfect for the cold weather, and makes a subtle statement with ease.
Bright colored beanies are some of the few I saw first, then the monochrome text beanies showed up and I'm slightly hooked to those right now. Beanies with text show a little more personality and are simply fun.I'm really loving this fun trend, I can imagine wearing it with a black skater dress, combat boots, and a faux leather jacket. How would you guys wear the beanie, let me know in the comments.

Midi Skirts Trend #9

I present to you beautiful people the midi skirt or how some put it the sassy pencil skirt. I adore these midi skirts in fun funky prints especially the gold sequinned number above(New Year's Eve party anyone?). Besides the array of prints and textures, these skirts work for a lot of different body types.Midi skirts look fab on everyone, you just need to watch where they hit you, what shoes you're wearing and you can definitely make it work.Do not be afraid of the midi skirt just because it's a bit more fabric than you're used to, these pieces typically come off sophisticated or gives an air of fun maturity.
Will you be trying the midi skirt this season, I can see them sky rocketing in popularity for the Spring(that is if skater skirts don't beat them to the punch...).I'm definitely Team Midi for the Spring, but are you? What other skirt styles caught your eye this year, let me know in the comment section below!

Trend #8

Holographic items for some odd reason were rarely seen in the shops that I went into, but oh was it on my mind. Holographic print just says FUTURE for some reason. I imagine women in holographic dresses showing up to a holiday party on hover boards(I watched too much Back to Future as a child). The holographic trend is a fresh take on metallic pieces and I welcome it with open arms!

The holographic trend goes with a lot of things, but they usually take the spotlight for themselves.I could imagine sporting this trend with an all white look.Freshness in its most simple form is taking place with this holographic trend, and it's on my Christmas list for sure! I want to see this trend take charge during the Spring and Summer, I feel like it'll go well with some bright colors. Do you like the holographic trend or is it giving you aluminum associations in the worse way? Let me know in the comment section below how you feel!

Trend #7

Platform sneakers are a blessing from the fashion Gods, let the church say amen.Platform sneakers will give me height even when I'm on the go. I love feeling tall(I'm naturally 5 foot 7, but I always wanted to be 5 foot 8 yes that little bit makes a difference lol), and these platform shoes give me an extra oomph that I always want.

7

Although I have a love for the simple black and white platform sneaker, I'm completely open to different styles. In my eyes the wilder the shoe the better, platform sneakers are already out of the box, why not? I'm eyeballing the all orange and all pink/purple pair, I could see myself strutting in these for the Spring and Summer. How do you feel about high top platforms? Are you down for looking like the fliest Amazon or do you prefer your sneakers to be flat?

Trend #6

Tweed and faux leather are such a match made in heaven(even though I was spellbound by the connection faux leather has with plaid).Tweed says sophistication for some odd reason to me, perhaps it's the strong texture and its slate grey tendency. Now taking the strength of tweed, and adding the edgy association that's attached to faux leather and you have a well seasoned bad ass on your hands guys.

Faux leather and tweed bags and jackets help build the canvas for something great. You already have your neutral(the grey), then you have your edgy aspect(the faux leather), add in a funky print or perhaps a neon color BOOM you've got fashion week realness. Tweed and faux leather were slightly understated but its potential for greatness was definitely not lost on me. Are you feeling the tweed and faux leather combo, or is plaid constantly winning in your book? Let me know how you feel in the comment section, until then get ready for the next big trend!

Trend #5

Chain link jewelry captured my attention in a very unexpected way. I think it's the bluntness of the chain link that draws me to this jewelry. The statement is big and bold and simple, sometimes that's all a look needs.Every time I see these necklaces of bracelets, a little minimalist squeal can be heard.

An Awesome Chain

Not only are these pieces great for minimalist looks, they have a tough edge to them. There's something slightly masculine about the straight forward chain link which I appreciate as well.I always imagine a silver chain link necklace, a white jersey dress a pair of sneakers with my afro in full blown glory, with an effortless appeal.I don't know where this affinity for simplistic pieces is coming from, but I don't mind exploring it.What did you guys think about the chain link trend, was it over hyped or not popular enough? Let me know in the comments how you feel!

Trend #4

The asymmetrical skirt is notoriously picked on. I have heard the "your skirt's only half way done", jokes before but frankly I don't care. The asymmetrical skirt has an ancient Grecian appeal to it, add faux leather and you've got an element of edginess too!Asymmetrical skirts are just bold, and scream "yea I'm not a full skirt, what about it!". Asymmetrical skirts also look fabulous on curvy physiques and I'm definitely here for that too.

Asymmetrical Skirts

Asymmetrical Skirts by deejaystyles featuring a bike skirt

Asymmetrical skirts are for the edgy, bold and daring which is why they definitely made my trend list for 2013(I'm still on the hunt for one).

Trend #3

Envelope

Envelope by deejaystyles featuring a mint green purse

This trend is both fabulous and torturous for me.I'm at university majority of them and  carry a big bulky book bag with books that cost too much stuffed inside.I don't need to buy a clutch(but I love them). When I have the opportunity to carry clutch bags, the first one I'm grabbing is an envelope style bag.
What attracts me to the clutch is the simplicity of the shape.Like I've said in previous posts I'm obsessed with blunt geometric shapes and this bag fits that quota perfectly. When I indulge in this trend, I'm making sure that it's a bright color or a wild pattern. The shape of the clutch is so simple and blunt it's the perfect canvas for something out of the box to collide with it.
My favorite envelope clutch out of the set above is definitely between the red and color block one at the bottom. The red makes the perfect splash of color on any ensemble and the color block one is franky...dope. The color block one is giving me 80s vibes, and reminds me of the film House Party(one of my faves!) Leave a comment below and tell me if a movie has ever influenced your style?

Trend #2

Black Floral Forest

Black Floral Forest by deejaystyles featuring a canvas purse

Floral print with a black back drop is edgier than it's light-hearted counterpart and this is why I gained an adoration for it. Black floral print still has all the feminine allure of floral but when given a black backdrop it gives a twist of toughness. Above we have several items adorned with the dark garden print, my favorite item out of all of them is between the combat boots, and the round bag(I love different shaped bags they're so quirky and fun to me).Every time I look at this set, I can visualize black opaque socks,a motorcycle jacket and maybe one of those spiky headbands that were popular during the Summer time before floral crowns grew popular(I really love black floral crowns too).
Besides the versatility of this print it speaks to a part of my personality, as far as the sweetness with an edgy undertone.Black floral print just "gets me" lol.Enough about me, let me know if you like black floral print,or prefer your floral print to have a lighter backdrop in the comments, and get ready for tomorrows beloved trend #3!
